"I Want Things That Money Can’t Buy" – Shifting Focus to True Fulfillment

A beautiful scene of the sun breaking through the clouds over a wheat field.

Listening to Concrete Jungle by Bad Omens, a particular line always gets me: "I want things that money can’t buy." It struck me how often we rely on money to solve problems, pursue goals, or even define success. Yet, when we pause to reflect, it’s clear that the things we most deeply yearn for—peace, love, meaning—are beyond a price tag.

In a world that drives us to focus on material gain, it’s easy to fall into the mindset that money is the ultimate solution. And yes, it’s a powerful tool that can bring comfort, opportunity, and security. But for true fulfillment, we have to look at what money can’t buy: the things that make life truly rich.

What Can’t Money Buy?

  1. Time – Money may buy conveniences, but every day we spend is gone forever. Are we investing our time in ways that truly matter?

  2. Love & Connection – Genuine relationships can’t be purchased. Are we nurturing the connections that bring us joy and belonging?

  3. Inner Peace – A calm, balanced inner world is built through choices and actions, not bought.

  4. Purpose – Money can fund our passions, but only self-discovery and growth can uncover a meaningful life purpose.

Three Steps to Focus on the Truly Valuable

  1. Audit Your Time

Track your time for one week, observing how you’re spending each hour. Are you investing time in things that align with your deeper values? Is there a balance between work, self-care, relationships, and pursuits that bring meaning? Small shifts in time management can help us focus on what truly fulfills us.

  2. Nurture Key Relationships

Set aside dedicated time each week to connect meaningfully with people who matter to you. That could mean reaching out to a friend you’ve lost touch with, spending quality time with family, or writing a letter to someone who’s made an impact on your life. These moments of connection remind us of the support we have and give us a sense of belonging.

  3. Define and Pursue Your Purpose

Ask yourself: What impact do I want to have on the world around me? Purpose gives us direction and fulfillment that goes beyond material success. This week, take one action toward aligning your life with your purpose. It might be volunteering, learning a new skill, or dedicating time to something you’re passionate about.

Something to Reflect On:

  • When you imagine a fulfilled life, what elements are present? How many of those are tied to wealth, and how many are rooted in experience and relationships?

  • If money weren’t a concern, how would you spend your time? How much of that can you incorporate into your current life?

  • What’s one thing you currently value that money can’t buy? How can you prioritize it more in your day-to-day?

Focusing on what money can’t buy allows us to step off the treadmill of materialism and invest in the things that truly matter. While money provides comfort and options, it’s these intangible treasures—time, love, inner peace, purpose—that make us feel truly rich. This week, let’s strive to live with intention and cultivate the things that bring lasting fulfillment.
